In this Pinterest tutorial, I’m going to show you how to set up Pinterest rich pins to help you get more out of your Pinterest marketing stay tuned.

Hi I’m Sara Nguyen your online marketing strategist helping you grow your business using social media with ease. If you’re new to this channel subscribing for all of the latest product reviews, social media marketing tips and training. And at any time during this video make sure you check out the description for links to all of the resources mentioned in this video.

When Pinterest first launched there was only one type of pin. Now, Pinterest has several types of rich pins that allows your business to provide more information on your pins. At the time of this recording there are six different types of rich pins these are app pins place pins, article pins, product pins, recipe pins and movie pins. Let’s have a look at what each one of these actually does.

App Pins

App pins include an install button so pinners can download an app without ever having to leave Pinterest. At the time of this recording app pins are only compatible with iOS apps.

You would use an app pin if you develop software, if you develop apps either free or paid and the benefit would be that Pinterest users who find your app on Pinterest can install it straight from their Pinterest account, increasing your installs of the app.

Place Pins

Place pins are pins that include a map, an address and a phone number. Types of businesses that would use place pins are typically brick-and-mortar businesses that have an actual address. Whether you’re a restaurant or a bakery or a design studio.

Using place pins makes it easy for Pinterest users to go from Pinterest to your location.

Article Pins

Article pins include headline information, author information and the story description helping pinners find and save stories that matter to them.

Article pins are great for bloggers, business blogs, news sites and any business that produces blogs articles or podcasts regularly.

Product Pins

Product pins include real-time pricing, availability and where to buy. If you have an e-commerce store the product pin is the perfect pin for you to use that enables your pinners to purchase your product within Pinterest.

Recipe Pins

Recipe pins include ingredients cooking times and serving information to get Pinterest cooks excited to hit the kitchen. If you’re a food blogger or if you put out recipes this recipe pin is definitely useful for you and helps pinners make the most of your recipe increasing the likelihood that they will actuallys use it.

Movie pins

Movie pins include ratings, cast members and reviews to help pinners learn about new movies and new releases.

Getting started with Rich Pins

In order to get started using rich pins, you will need to prepare your website by adding some code, specifically meta tags relevant to the type of rich pin you want to use.
If you want to have multiple rich pins on your website, then the priority of rich pin data is 1: app pins, 2 product pins 3 recipe pins, 4 movie pins,  5 article pins and 6 place pins.

Once you’ve decided which rich pin you want to use you need to add the relevant code to your website. To get this code to add to your website you’ll need to go to your Pinterest account, click on your profile on the top right hand corner, click on settings and the  profile tab.

From the profile tab where it says website, you need to enter in your website and then mine’s already been confirmed but your one will say verified if you haven’t already done so.

Once you click on that verified button Pinterest will give you a couple of lines of code. Copy and paste that line of code.

If you have a WordPress website and you use the Yoast SEO plugin it becomes even easier to complete the process. The first thing that you need to do is ensure that you go to Yoast and then the social tab.

From there you click on Facebook and enable the Open Graph metadata tab. Ensure that that button is pressed. You also need to connect your Facebook account here as well. Once you’ve done that you then go to the Pinterest tab and paste the code that you’ve just been provided by Pinterest and click Save Changes.

Once that takes and if there haven’t been any problems then you’ll see on your Pinterest account that the site has been confirmed and verified with this little tick.

You’ll then need to take a URL be it a blog post a recipe post or whichever post that is related to the pin that you want to add to your site and copy that URL into the Pinterest URL debugger to validate it.

If there was a problem with the installation of the metadata code after you validate it Pinterest will tell you so and flag the issues that it has. If there are no problems then you’ll see a green tick and it will then ask you to apply for rich pins. Once you click on the apply Now button Pinterest will then approve your request and you’ll see a congratulations your rich pins have been approved message once everything is successful.

Now, this is pretty tricky and takes a little bit of stepping through so if you’re not technical and this is extremely overwhelming get it web developer to do it for you.

So there you have it an overview of what rich pins are and how to install it on your WordPress website so you can start using them right away.

    Hi Sara

If I use rich pins, do I leave the description blank when creating my pins?

    Thanks!
