It’s all well and fine to set big goals for your business at the beginning of the year and actually it’s a great thing to do, but many people find it hard to stay focused and stay on track so they can continue to work towards their business goals.
Whether that’s to grow a social media following, grow their income, or grow their impact. So I’m going to share three different strategies that I’ve learned over the years that helped me stay focused and hopefully you to stay focused on your goals as well.
So the first strategy to help you focus and to help you achieve your goals is to have an unbreakable standard. And this is a concept that I learned from transformational coach Jim Fortin. The idea around having an unbreakable standard is to have a set amount of whatever you said that you would do and to make sure that you do it no matter what.
So what does this actually mean? So for example, if I am an Olympic athlete and I said that I would commit to training every day and, if I had to catch a plane, which was a long haul flight that took me out of training possibly for two days when I actually land and have the opportunity to train, I would make up those training sessions that I lost.
Now, this might sound a little bit extreme. So, for example, for me in a real-world, non-Olympic athletes scenario, as a business owner, one of my goals is to release a YouTube video weekly.
That’s my unbreakable standard and I will release a YouTube video weekly every single week for the year. And if something happens, so let’s just say there’s a family emergency or some life event happens where I cannot do the video I have in place a promise that means that I will either make up that video or release the video in another way.
So for me personally, I will release a video every week and if I can’t make that video, released, scheduled then what I would do is I will do a Facebook live or I’ll make up that video with multiple Facebook lives in the following week. So it’s all about keeping the promise that you make to yourself and your business, and having a fallback to the release of the thing that you said you would do or to catch up with it some way.
And I find that when you have an unbreakable standard of, “Yes, I’m going to do this in this amount of time and if I don’t do it, then I’ll make it up in this way.” this really helps you stay focused on your goals because you’re constantly delivering and it’s forcing you to be consistent in one way or another.
The second strategy that I’ve implemented and I find extremely useful is a concept that I learned from major guru, Eben Pagan. And this is the concept of having an accountability partner.
I’ve had a lot of accountability partners in the past and I find that having an accountability partner, someone who you meet with regularly to check in with your goals is a really handy thing to have because when you know that you’d need to be accountable to someone else, not just yourself, there’s a shift that happens where you don’t want to let people down or you don’t want to show up empty-handed.
So for example, I have an accountability partner, Hey Haruna, if you’re watching, I hope you watch all of my videos, and we meet on a weekly basis. It does help to have this person in the same time zone, but that’s not a deal-breaker.
We’re aligned in the sense that we’re both focused on growing our business and every week we catch up to set our goals. We do a digest of the week that was past, our challenges, our successes, and we set the new goals for the next week.
It’s a really nice thing to have and it’s a really great way of helping you stay accountable when you know there’s someone else that you have to check in with. It is also therapeutic and also really nice to have someone who understands you and who understands your business challenges that you can talk about on a weekly basis as well.
I find having an accountability partner really, really powerful and I’ve always loved the concept of interacting with like-minded people. You can also extend this to having an accountability group where you have multiple people who check-in at the same time every week or every fortnight and you all set goals and you all talk about your progress as business owners.
So having an accountability partner or an accountability group is a really great way to stay focused on your goals. You can find accountability partners by posting in Facebook groups and business groups and reaching out to people who have similar interests or other business owners as well.
And it works really well to help you stay focused so that you both have something to check-in for. The third strategy to help you stay focused on your goals is something that I really love to do and it’s something that you can do whether you’re a paper person or a digital person, and this is to do daily tracking.
So if you’ve got big goals for yourself or your business, it’s really helpful to check in on them every day even if you don’t work them every single day. I’m going to put a link in the description to a tracker that I have that you can use.
It’s a template where you can fill out your goals and what you want to track and then you just tick every day that you do it or you don’t. I really like this. And the concept and the idea where I learned this from was actually from Jerry Seinfeld.
So when Jerry Seinfeld was doing comedy to start, in the beginning, what he would do was he would mark on a calendar every single day where he performed or he worked on comedy. And this motivated him to not break the chain so he could work on it every day.
So this is a little bit of an adaptation of that. So it’s about having a way of seeing every single day. Are you actually doing something that moves you closer to your goals?
And having a tracker of some form, whether it’s a spreadsheet or whether it’s a free app. And I’ve got links in the description to lots of apps that you can use.
It’s a great visual way to see that, “Yes, I am or I’m not actually working towards my goals.” so you can take inventory of what you’re doing and adjust if you need to work a bit more on your business or decrease it if you feel that you’re working too much on your business.
But daily tracking is an extremely powerful and simple way of helping you stay focused and to help you achieve your goals. So there you have it, my top three strategies to help you stay focused and help you achieve your business goals no matter how big or small they are for you this year.
We talked about having an unbreakable standard, something that you say you’re going to do, and a backup to make up if you don’t actually get it done. We talked about having an accountability partner, someone who holds you accountable and you hold them accountable that you can check in every single week.
And also to have a daily tracker so that you can see visually how you are going in terms of progressing towards your goals. If you found this video useful, give me a thumbs up and don’t forget to subscribe to my channel.
